Downtown Development
70 Rainey St.
1.16.15

Rainey Street has witnessed dramatic change over the past five years, and the once quiet neighborhood is quickly developing into a robust downtown district. The recent announcement of a mixed-use tower at 70 Rainey will only add to its growth.

The 70 Rainey plot has seen several owners throughout the past few years, but Sackman Enterprises now stakes claim to the well situated site. Last year, Sackman purchased 70 Rainey from Riverside Resources and released plans for a condo development. 70 Rainey joins The Independent and 5th & West as downtown Austin's most recently announced condo towers.

Best Downtown Austin Pubs

Best of Austin - top 10 PubsAustin has so many popular watering holes, it was a tough job narrowing this list down to ten. These are in no particular order, each one has its own special charm, but what they do deliver, is done right.

1. THE TAVERN

The Tavern, a sports bar at 12th and Lamar has been a local watering hole since 1933. Converted from a grocery store to a bar after the end of prohibition, this pub with a colorful history has become a neighborhood landmark. The Tavern is the type of place you never want to leave. In fact, keep an eye out for a former employee, long since deceased, said to wander the halls of the second floor.

Speculative rumors of plans for a new office tower on Block 23 have been circulating through the Austin commercial grapevine. Trammell Crow Co. and Principal Real Estate Investors have officially purchased a plot of land at the northwest corner of Cesar Chavez and San Antonio.

Block 23 is part of the Green Water Plant redevelopment project that is set to begin construction immediately. The building at 500 W. 2nd St. will span just over 500 thousand SF and reach 29 stories. There will be plenty of room for offices, restaurants, and retail space in the new tower.

Construction is planned to be complete by the first quarter of 2017.
